Dental implants are generally considered a permanent solution to tooth loss.
Dental implants are among the most effective and reliable solutions for tooth loss. They are an excellent option for those who would like to restore full oral function and enjoy a natural-looking smile.
During the treatment process, an implant made of biocompatible material is placed directly into the jawbone — this acts as an artificial root. A replacement tooth in the form of a crown is then attached to the implant. Dental implants are generally considered a permanent solution, and success rates are typically very good. There are, however, a few factors that can affect their lifespan and durability.
Read on to find out how long you can expect your dental implant to last and what you should do to take care of yours…
How long do dental implants last?
If your dentist confirms that you are a good candidate for dental implant surgery, the treatment will be considered a permanent solution to tooth loss. This is because the implant will actually fuse with the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. This process takes a few months, but once it is complete, you can expect excellent stability and a strong foundation for your artificial tooth.
Although the implant is intended to be permanent, there is a chance that the prosthetic tooth or crown will need to be replaced in time. Your crown may suffer general wear and tear or even become chipped or cracked as a result of an injury, in which case you will need to have a new one placed. With the right care, dental crowns generally last between 15 and 20 years.
What can cause dental implants to fail?
Although dental implants are designed to last a lifetime, there are cases in which they fail. Implant failure usually occurs when something disrupts either the osseointegration or healing process.
One of the factors that can lead to implant failure is poor oral hygiene. Once an implant has been placed, it is very important that you take care of it just as you would your natural teeth — this includes brushing and flossing daily, limiting your consumption of sugary foods and drinks, and seeing your dentist for regular check-ups. Without proper oral hygiene, plaque can build up around the implant and lead to a condition known as peri-implant disease.
The treatment can also fail if there is insufficient jawbone to support the dental implant. Your surgeon will, however, check that you are suited to the treatment before going ahead with the procedure.
Other factors that could cause implant failure include smoking, teeth grinding, and certain medical conditions.
Can a failed implant be treated?
If you suspect that your implant is failing, you must see your dentist as soon as possible. Some of the warning signs to look out for include an implant that shifts or feels loose, pain when biting and/or chewing, and any of the symptoms of peri-implant disease — these include swelling, bleeding, redness around the implant, receding gums, and pus.
If your implant fails, it is possible to have it removed. In some cases, it is possible to successfully replace the failed implant. If your dentist identifies bone loss around the implant, they may recommend that you have a bone graft before placing a new implant.
