It is advisable to eat soft foods that are easy to chew following wisdom teeth surgery.
The wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to erupt and are located at the back of the mouth. Also known as the third molars, the wisdom teeth often cause oral health issues because there is insufficient space to accommodate them at the back of the mouth. For this reason, wisdom teeth can erupt at irregular angles or emerge only partially through the gums, which can lead to several issues, such as infection, crowding and damage to the surrounding teeth.
If you have impacted wisdom teeth, your dentist is likely to recommend that you have them extracted. After an extraction, it is completely normal to experience some pain and discomfort, so it is advisable that you stick to foods that are easy to eat. Read on to find out more about what you should eat after wisdom teeth surgery, and what you can do to aid the healing process…
Soups and broths
Soups and broths that are packed with vegetables are a great option following wisdom teeth removal. They are easy to eat and highly nutritious, which is helpful when you need to get your nutrition requirements as simply as possible. Soups and broths also help to keep you hydrated while you are recovering from surgery. Just be sure to enjoy them at a lukewarm temperature as hot foods and drinks can cause irritation inside the mouth.
Mashed fruits and vegetables
Mashed vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins require minimal chewing and are packed with nutrients. They make a healthy and filling meal and are ideal when you need some energy in an easy-to-consume form.
There are a range of fruits that can be mashed as well — some good options include bananas, stewed apples, and avocados.
Scrambled eggs
Eggs are an excellent source of protein and are packed with a range of vitamins and minerals. They can be prepared in various ways, but scrambled eggs are particularly easy to eat and swallow. For an extra-nutritious meal, consider having your scrambled eggs with a side of mashed avocado or some calcium-rich cream cheese.
Smoothies
If you’re looking for a way to meet your nutrition needs, but are struggling with discomfort after your treatment, you might consider making your own smoothies. They are very easy to consume, and it’s possible to use a range of ingredients to suit your preferences. Try and combine protein sources like natural yoghurt with nutritious fruits and vegetables like berries and leafy greens.
