Dentures do wear down over time. This may be due to normal tooth loss or by other factors such as heavy biting or grinding of the denture against the teeth at night. Dentures must also be replaced for hygiene purposes when they get old and dirty.
How long dentures last will depend on their quality, usage, treatment routines and the particular damage caused by common dental conditions among individual denture wearers. Taking proper care of dentures can prolong how long dentures last and overall denture life expectancy.
The typical lifespan of a denture is between 7 to 10 years.
Dental implants function in a way that helps dentures stay in place and make them feel like natural teeth.
Dental implant devices are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw (or both), which then attaches dentures to the implants. The surgical placement of dental implants involves making tiny holes into which titanium posts will be implanted, along with screws and other hardware designed to hold the denture firmly in place.
The surgery may take several hours, but when it’s done, dentures can be securely attached by means of small attachments involved in the surgery – called abutments – protruding from beneath the gums.
Dentures are not generally hard to get used to. After all, dentures are teeth that you wear in your mouth. The fact is that denture users get used to having dentures so quickly because dentures eventually feel like their own natural teeth.
