About Wisdom Teeth

What is a wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth that are found in your mouth, usually popping up between the ages of 17 and 25. They typically appear when other teeth have already been lost, and they can take over space where there is no room left. The extra space taken up by wisdom teeth can put pressure on other teeth such that these teeth may become infected or diseased.

What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

Generally, despite the pain, a wisdom tooth will erupt without issues on the surrounding teeth. However, If there isn’t enough space for this tooth to emerge, it can cause pain and discomfort to the gums and cheek area. This pain can also mean they start shifting and place impact against the tooth beside it. This is known as an impacted wisdom tooth.

It’s no secret that wisdom teeth can be troublesome and painful at the worst of times, especially if it’s an impacted wisdom tooth. If you are currently experiencing a wisdom tooth that requires extraction, allow Dr Jaclyn Wong in Melbourne to help take care of this.
