Thread Lifting in Glen Iris

Dr Jaclyn Wong has been performing thread lifting procedures for over a decade, drawing on her postgraduate diploma in Anatomy and Fellowship with the Australasian Academy of Dento-Facial Aesthetics.

As the face ages, tissue that once sat higher begins to descend. The mid-face softens, the jawline loses definition, and the areas around the cheeks and mouth change in ways that reflect the combined effects of reduced collagen, gravitational shift, and changes in the underlying fat.

Thread lifting is a non-surgical facelift procedure that addresses this tissue descent by repositioning the tissue rather than masking the change.

Dr Jaclyn Wong performs facial thread lifting from her Glen Iris dental clinic. As a practitioner with both medical and dental qualifications as well as a postgraduate Diploma in Anatomy, she approaches thread lifting with a depth of anatomical understanding.

What is Thread Lifting?

Thread lifting uses dissolvable PDO (polydioxanone) sutures inserted under the skin to mechanically lift and reposition tissue. The threads have small grooves along their surface that grip the tissue, guiding it upward into a more supported position.

PDO threads are fully dissolvable, breaking down over approximately six months. During and after this dissolution process, the threads stimulate the body to produce new collagen along the thread path. This collagen scaffold continues to support the repositioned tissue after the thread itself has dissolved.

Thread lifting is performed under local anaesthetic and is carried out in the clinic without the need for a general anaesthetic or a hospital setting.

What Thread Lifting Can Address

Thread lifting is used to address tissue descent and loss of definition in areas including:

  • Mid-face sagging and loss of cheek definition
  • Jowling along the jawline
  • Heaviness and descent in the lower face
  • Fine lines around the mouth and chin area
  • Nasal contour, including dorsal humps and tip definition
  • Nasolabial hollowing

The Benefits of Thread Lifting

Thread lifting is a non-surgical treatment for sagging skin that works with the body’s own tissue rather than against it. Key benefits include:

  • Performed under local anaesthetic with no hospital stay required
  • Dissolvable PDO sutures that leave no foreign material in the tissue
  • Collagen stimulation that continues after the threads dissolve
  • Suitable for a range of areas including the mid-face, jawline, and nasolabial region
  • Can be combined with other treatments as part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan

Understanding your thread lift treatment options

Thread lifting involves different thread types suited to different clinical goals and tissue requirements.

Lifting threads

Lifting threads are used to mechanically reposition tissue that has descended over time. They come in varying degrees of lifting strength (such as lighter, medium, and heavier lift options) selected based on the weight and degree of descent of the tissue being addressed.

Rejuvenation threads

Rejuvenation threads are finer, single-strand threads used to stimulate collagen production and improve tissue quality and volume in specific areas. They are placed at a more superficial level than lifting threads and are particularly well suited to addressing fine lines around the mouth, under the eyes, and around the chin. One option Dr Jaclyn uses incorporates multiple threads in a single insertion, designed to volumise the nasolabial region and soften the hollowing that often develops there.

Structural nasal threads

Structural nasal threads are a thread option that supports and refines the contour of the nose without injection into the nasal anatomy. They can be used to address concerns such as a nasal dorsal hump, tip definition, or overall nasal shape, offering a non-surgical alternative to rhinoplasty for patients.

Preparing for thread lifting

Dr Jaclyn often recommends a preparatory period before thread lifting, particularly for patients whose results may benefit from first relaxing the muscles that work against the lift.

This may involve anti-wrinkle treatment to relax the relevant muscle groups, or fat dissolving in the tissue to be lifted, reducing the load that the threads need to support.

What to expect from your thread lifting procedure

The procedure

Thread lifting is performed under local anaesthetic. A topical numbing gel is applied first, followed by local anaesthetic injections.

Recovery

There’s a recovery period of approximately two weeks following thread lifting. Some mild swelling and bruising is normal in the first few days, with most of this resolving within the first four days. During the two-week period following treatment, patients are advised to eat soft food, avoid excessive mouth opening, and sleep on their back rather than on their side.

Results over time

Thread lifting results develop progressively. The procedure aims to reposition tissue, with the collagen response continuing to develop over the following months.

Thread lift procedure costs

The cost of thread lift treatment in Glen Iris varies depending on the number and type of threads required and the areas being addressed. A detailed treatment plan and cost estimate is provided following consultation with Dr Jaclyn. Flexible payment options are available through TLC Payment Plans.

Thread Lifting as Part of a Treatment Plan

Thread lifting addresses tissue descent by repositioning the tissue directly. Thread lifting may be appropriate at an earlier stage of facial tissue descent, and for some patients it forms part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan that includes other treatments.

Dr Jaclyn will discuss what’s appropriate for your individual situation at consultation.
